Had Split In Knee With 18 Stitches. Lower Leg Is Swollen. No Blood Clot. Help?

I have an 88 year old mother, she split her knee open a number of years ago had 18 stitches. For the past month the lower leg is swollen, = an ultra sound was completed and there is no blood clot. Her dr. has tried various meds and we cannot get rid of the swelling. We have not tried compression stockings. I don't know what to do for her. Any ideas

You should do a doppler study to see if there is any varicose vein or not, or there may be some reasons that is causing lymphatic obstruction.
