Had Unprotected Sex. Can Medication Stop HIV After Sex?
my son is in thailand and has just told me that he has gone with a woman and had unprotected sex, others tell him that they are pretty sure she is a prostitute. He tells me he tells me that he has gone to a doctor who has said that there is a 45% chance he can get HIV , however he has been given some tablets that have a 97% chance to stop him getting it, is there really such medication that does this a day or so after having sex?
Hey there k2512. I can only assume that your son has been given some anti-retroviral tabs to 'stop' getn HIV. While am not a great fan of percentages, it is probably the only option for him given the circumstances. Having said that, there is no fool-proof way of arriving at a percentage of 'risk' for aquiring HIV from a 'single contact' through sexual exposure but i dont agree with a 45% chance..seems far too steep. All things considered, it may be prudent for a bit of sex education where your son is concerned & prevention henceforth is definitely better than a cure. Regds & hope this allays your fear.
