Hard Lump On Leg. Occasionally Painful Taking Cephalexin. What Is This?

I have a hard lump on my left leg on the inside about 2" above my ankle. It started out in January this year as a very small knot I found while rubbing lotion on my leg. It has grown to about the size of a 50 cent piece and is purple/brown in color, similar to the little tiny veins you get on your feet when you get older. I am very active, use treadmill at least 3 times a week, exercise, healthy, eat well, 10 lbs overweight, still work, 70 years old, female. My MD told me it takes a long time to heal something on that part of your leg, but this is getting larger and starts to hurt at times. I have been taking Cephalexin 500 mg because it looked like an infection, but have taken several rounds of that and it hasn't gotten much better. I elevate my foot at night while sleeping. What does it sound like, what specialist area should I contact? Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The hard lump that you have described can be a bone swelling. This could be due to a soft tissue swelling like sebaceous cyst or vascular malformation. A direct examination by a surgeon will help in confirmation of diagnosis.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Any lump or swelling occuring spontaneously (without any injury) and is growing in size definitely needs to be evaluated by thorough investigations. This is a must at your age of 70 yrs.

As per the description, "hard" swelling could be arising from the bone. Infected swelling usually presents with Fever, generalised weakness and it will be painful to touch along with local rise of temparature.

I personally feel that there is no role for self medication and just dont waste time by waiting any more.

Consult your treating physician for a thorough evaluation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
