Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
I understand that you and your family must be very concerned about your sister's surgery. From the limited clinical information which you have provided, it appears that your sister is going to have an "ileostomy" or a "colostomy" procedure - that is a procedure which bypasses the bowel at some point, so that the affected part is rested.
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and malnutrition. Crohn's can affect any part of the digestive tract, but it often affects the small intestines or colon. Surgical treatment is ususlly reserved for severe cases, when medical management fails. Surgery can be of two types:
1) resection surgeries - where the affected aprt of the bowel is removed
2) bypass surgeries - which I have explained before.
Now, bypass surgery is usually done as a last resort in severe cases, when the person is having persistent and long-standing problems. So the the prognosis in suuch cases is guarded. I suggest that you remain hopeful and stay supportive to her as she is going through these difficult periods.
Wish you all the best.
