Have Alzheimers. Continued, Chronic UTIs.Report Shows Increased Rods, Enterococcus Specidies Presumptive, Alpha Hemolytic Streptococcus. Suggest

My mother, 74 years old, end stages of Alzheimers, has continuing, chronic UTI's. Most often the cultures come back as E.Coli. This time, the results are as follows: Gram Neg. Rods - greater than 100,000; Alpha hemolytic Streptococcus - greater than 100,000 and enterococcus specidies presumptive - greater than 50,000. I'm VERY concerned about these results. She's in a LTC facility and under hospice care, but it's a constant struggle to get property peri-care for her and I'm really worried that it's really bad this time.

Urologist 's  Response
Hello
Thanks for your query.Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your mother has chronic UTI and her urine culture shows infection due to E-Coli and Streptococci .

Please give her antibiotics as per culture report along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.

Ensure to drink more water to keep her urine dilute.

Since in chronic UTI bacterial flora always change their sensitivity pattern you have to repeat her urine culture very frequently and give antibiotic as per culture report.
Thanks and Regards
Dr.Patil..
