Suggest Treatment For Strep Throat Infection With High WBC Count

my niece is 13 yrs old. running high temps from 103 to 107, she went to her dr. and she has strep throat but her white blood count is very high. Is this just from her having strep throat or could it be something more serious? Her dr. put her on a high dose of antibiotics and she has to have another blood test tomorrow. She said if the WBCs are still high, she will have to go to the hospital.

Hi,

High fever with diagnosed strep throat is surely due to a bacterial infection. It needs proper doses of antibiotics as per weight. It takes a few days for WBC counts to come down. Hence, it is also important to see for clinical improvement as observed by family members and the treating doctor. Also, what is needed is symptomatic treatment with an anti-inflammatory medicine with painkiller property and anti-pyretic that is to control fever.

Supportive treatment in the form of a PPI like Omeprazole, Povidone iodine gargles, plenty of oral fluids and admission to the hospital is required for intravenous antibiotics and fluids to have proper hydration and electrolyte balance. Complete the courses till cured well. If required have further investigations say for liver and kidney function, X-ray of chest to rule out lower respiratory tract infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
