Have BP Issues, Diabetes, Prostate, COPD. On PentosecD, Clopitab, Sodium Bicarbonate. Reduces Potassium?
My father is 87 years old. He is suufering from multiple problems like BP, Diabetis, Prostate, COPD
He has been taking following medicines -
PentosecD, Clopitab 150A, Deanxit, Ciplar 10, Olmetor 20, GluconormG1, Lasilactone 50 along with multivitamin tablet with folic acid.
His potassium level in blood shot up to 5.8 and creatins to 5.1. What does this suggest? I learned the drug in pentosecD increases potassium level in blood. I gave him sodium bicarbonate to reduce potassium. will this help? Can anybody answer? Thanks Pramod Pai India

Welcome to HCM,
Your father is suffering from Diabetes type II, Hypertension ,COPD(Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and BPH(Benign Prostate Hypertrophy).
He has developed Nephropathy due to most likely diabetes and/or Hypertension.
His potassium and creatinine are high which indicate kidney failure, please do not think it is due to pentosec D, high potassium level is dangerous so please visit a Nephrologist and start the treatment as soon as possible.
Please do not give sodium bicarbonate it is not for high potassium level.
He will need many changes in his prescription as Lasilactone can increase Potassium level needs to be stopped. Low dose of aspirin can be continued.
If blood pressure is high it must be well controlled.
If any treatable cause of worsening of kidney failure is there it must be treated promptly.
If kidney failure increases then Hemodialysis becomes life saving.
His diabetes treatment may require change as there is risk of low blood sugar and increasing kidney failure.
