Hi Dr.Kochar , i AM 63 YEAR OLD AM SUFFERING FROM NASAL POLYEP FOR THE LAST ABOUT 9-10 YEARS AND I HAVE ADVISED FOR FESS DUE TO CERTAIN REASONS I CAN NOT GET MYSELF OPERATED AT PRESENT . I HAVE USED LOT OF NASAL SPRAYS AND ORAL STERIODS FOR THE RELIEF . KINDLY ADVISE ME WHICH IS THW SAFEST STERIOD AND CAN BE TAKEN WITH ANY MEDICINE TO REDUCE THE SIDE EFFECT OF THE STERIOD REGARDS ..ANIL RAIZADA , DELHI CANTONEMENT, DELHI.
Before opting for surgery as treatment for nasal polyp, discuss with your doctor about the chances of recurrence. If chances of recurrence are minimal, you should consider surgical measures.
As far as conservative approaches are concerned, steroids are effective measures. I suggest Duonase nasal spray (azelastine + fluticasone) to my patients. Use these drugs under medical supervision inview of addictive potentials.
Some common side effects of prolonged oral steroids can be countered by mucosal protective antacids like sucralfate +/- pantaprazole and calcium supplements. Watch out of high blood sugar and blood pressure during the therapy.
