Have Diarrhea. Taking Loperamide And Risedronate Medication. Can The Medication Be Continued?
I have had watery diarrhea for two weeks (6-10 times per day), no abdominal cramps, no blood or mucus. Loperamide seems to work if I start every day with two tabs. If I stay within the daily guidelines of no more than 8 tabs per day, can I continue to take it this way. I will be seeing my doctor May 29. I am fairly sure the diarrhea is a reaction to risedronate which I just started taking - took second dose May 1 and diarrhea started within days of that dose. I have also developed nausea. Thank you very much, Linda
Every diarrhea which lasts longer than 48 hours should be diagnosed with stool tests. It is not reasonable to treat diarrhea for 2 weeks without medical attention. Risedronate can cause such symptoms indeed. However it can be also gastrointestinal infection or even partial bowels obstruction (due to inflammatory bowels disease). If you feel this is the Risedronate effect, please consult your doctor and consider not taking it.
You should also have stool tests and stool culture tests done to rule out an infection. Antibiotics might be necessary. Loperamid should not be taken for so long time without medical consult.
Hope this will help. Regards.
