Have Fistula Going Into Bladder, Gas With Urination, Expelling Feces With Urine. How Long Does Healing Take?
I have just been diagnost with a fistula going into my bladder. I have had gas with urination for over a year now and for the last six months I have been exspelling feces the size of a pencil tip with urination. I have an appointent in a month to see a surgeon. What can I expect to happen and how long does the healing proces take. I am a 55 year old , 220 pound woman who has lost 60 pounds. I stopped smoking 10 yeasrs ago but have A-Fib and hypertension. I am also taking morphine for a spinal compression. Is there hope?
Almost certainly, this is due to colonic diverticulosis, and probably one of the diverticuli has gotten infected, and has ruptured into the adjacent bladder. You will have to get imaging of colon done, such as MRI or Gastrograffin enema following which the surgeon might decide to excise the affected colonic segment. In some instances, if they feel a colonic surgery will not go smoothly, they might stage the surgery, and in fact you might require to give consent for a colostomy, but with present day skills, I hope that will not be required. If this goes smoothly, the surgey and convalescence should take about 2 weeks under normal circumstances.
