Have Had A Mirena IUD. Have Spotting, Bleeding. Should I Remove It?

Hello,
I have had a Mirena IUD since August 2011. I experienced some spotting along with my normal periods for about the first year. Within the past six months the spotting has become nearly constant, and I still have a period of heavier bleeding. What are my options to control the spotting? Should I consider having it removed?

Hi dear user, thanks for asking to us.

Irregular bleedig and spotting is one of the major side effects of MIRENA. In my opinion you should first get an USG done to check the position of IUD. If position is normal then no need of removal of IUD. You can try tablets of tranaxemic acid 500 mg for 3-5 days or low dose Oral contaceptives (like Yesmin, femilon etc) for 21 days.

Hope this helps.
