Have Hashimoto's Disease, Advised To Avoid Gluten. How To Reduce The Reaction After Having Wheat?

Hi, I have hashimoto's and had been advised to avoid gluten. I have avoided refined wheat and sugar for many years but was eating spelt bread and occasionally pasta. These forms of wheat never seemed to cause a reaction for me but may have been a low level reaction I was unable to discern. When I did have anything with refined flour or sugar I would get a tight feeling in my stomach and some bloating. However a few days ago I had a piece of wheat and rye toast and got quite a big reaction with extreme exhaustion and aches resulting an hour later. Obviously I'll have to be extra vigilant and avoid any wheat. I gather an immune reaction can last up to 6 months. Do you know any way of dampening down this reaction? It seems such a shame to have been careful for 2 months or more and just from one peice of toast I may be having worse symptoms than ever for 6 months! It's been 3 days on and I still feel pretty bad. The other question is why would my reaction be so big, have I become even more sensitive to wheat because I've been avoiding gluten in recent months?

Welcome to HCM.I would agree that it is a shame to suffer by eating one toast, but you must realise it is the gluten which causes your food allergy and subsequent symptoms. You have not become more sensitive to wheat but were always sensitive to it.You were symptom free as long as you avoided the gluten, the body will react strongly whenever it is exposed to gluten. The release of histamine and other neurotransmitters can cause exhaustion, bronchospasm, acidity, abdominal cramps and other symptoms which you are probably aware of.It would be prudent to continue avoiding gluten in your diet and be more careful in nthe future.
