Have Lower Back Pain.Blood Work Showed Elevated Creatine Level. Medication?

I am 44yrs old in pretty good health been weight training since the age of 18. In the month of April this year I ended up getting some serious pain in my lower back. This pain got worse as the days went by. i had made an appointment to see my doctor. He did some blood work on me and found out that my Creatine Kinase levels were at the time 1067. He them did another blood test 3 days later and it read 384. He then waited another month to check it and it was about 525. Sinc then he made an appointment for me to see an rheumatic doctor in which I had just seen last week. He told me not to work out for two weeks because he had to see what my borderline number is. As of this rime I feel as better as i ever been. My question is could it be possible that since my muscle tissue is bigger than the average and how I workout could this produce a higher number. I am a bigger muscular guy. I also take protein, a preworkout drink and once in a while some creatine could my numbers flexuate because of all these things?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

It is a wrong notion that a muscular person can have higher levels of creatine kinase enzyme levels. Irrespective of the body muscle mass, the CKM (creatine kinase Muscle enzyme) level should be normal.

Elevated levels of CKM levels indicates muscle breakdown or dystrophy in the absence of a CARDIAC CAUSE (because Creatine kinase levels also increase in cardiac muscle problems).

But in your case, the raised CK levels could be attributed to EXERCISE or MUSCLE TRAUMA.

The normal levels of CK in Men should be between 30-160 units/L

So, you need a thorough evaluation to know the exact cause of raised CK levels.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
