Hi, Age per-se is not a contraindication for the surgery. However, the Diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid dysfunction should be well controlled to make the operative and post-operative phase problem free. Unfortunately, conditions like lumbar canal stenosis occur due to wear and tear of the joints of the back and therefore manifest as we age. I am sure your surgeon has considered alternative treatments including continuing with oral pain killers, epidural injection etc and has advised surgery as the option of last resort.
