Have Mood Swings, Anger Problems, Depression. Is It ODD Or Bipolar Disorder?

I have a daughter who is 22 years old and I have had so much trouble with her moods since she was a child. I have taken her to many doctors and child psychologist and counsellors and have had no help. Now she is in a relationship and her moods are greatly affecting him. She knows she has a problem with anger but I am so worried about her and she is looking more and more depressed. I have always wondered if she is ODD or Bipolar. I just feel so helpless.

Hi,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic!

I understand that you are concerned about your daughter. The symptoms that you have described are unlikely to be that of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, but are more suggestive of either borderline personality disorder or bipolar disorder.

Though it is difficult to suggest a diagnosis without seeing the patient, in my opinion, she should be evaluated by a qualified psychiatrist for borderline personality disorder, which is characterized by impulsive behaviour, frequent emotional disturbances (but usually not as severe as in bipolar disorder), problems in interpersonal relationships and a sense of isolation.

Hope this helps you. Please feel free to contact us if you need any further advice.

Best wishes.

Hi

Thanks for your query

Information given by you is quite less to differentiate between ODD and bipolar disorder.

ODD usually diagnosed if person shows excessive and persistent anger, argue often with stubborn atitude, deliberately annoy others, blames others for his or her mistakes and these behaviours are causing enough distress for the family and interfere with academic and social functioning, and are persisting for more than 6 months.

Bipolar disorder is mainly mood disorder with alternating manic and depressive episodes.
In this at one time patient is euphoric, full of energy, decreased sleep and after some time will be depressed, with decreased communication, guilt feeling, apathy.

Regards.
