Have Pain In Right Side, Difficulty Breathing. X-ray Shows No Fracture. How To Improve?

Hi there I am taking part in a nationals squash finals next week but 4 weeks ago I experienced severe pain on right side in mid thoracic area In between the medial border of scapula and the 6th rib, when I breath it seems to affect the whole rib cage making it difficult to take in a full breath. Have had X-rays and there is no fractures etc. and seeing how I wasn't hit by anything would find it hard to believe if there was. Hence I stopped training but even this hasn't improved the condition as finding it hard to move around or reach out and worse to pull in with right arm. So am not sure how to improve it have tried physio an this seems to stir up rather than settle the pain as they have been rocking an trying to manipulate the spain any suggestions. Am over this pain! I have been trying to rock on a ball next to area doing stretches of extension but still can't get relief. I went up to play a very gentle game an the first serve couldn't even put any pressure onto ball "help" please any suggestion? Many thanks Sandy

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, I suspect it could be a muscle pull or catch.

In the acute setting of pain, You should not do any stretching or physiotherapy as it will still worsen the condition. The strained muscle should initially be given some rest so as to relax and become supple.

The general management guidelines are as follows -
* Rest for few days and don't involve in activities that causes pain
* Ice packing of the affected area once in 2 hours to alleviate the pain
* Moist heat fomentation to relax the taut muscles
* Local application of pain killer gel with light & gentle massage
* Muscle relaxant medication as needed

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
