Have Pulmonary Emboli In Lungs Due To Chemo Treatment For Breast Cancer. In Need Of Coumadin For The Rest Of Life. Possiblity Of Monitoring Blood Without Medicine?

Hello I am a retired RN and 4 years ago I developed Pulmonary Emboli in my lungs . This happened after my third round of chemo for breast cancer which caused my heart to go into fibrillation. My entire heart was affected. While being treated in hospital I was told I would have to be treated with blood thinners for the rest of my life. recently my family doctor discussed the need for the Coumadin for the rest of my life. Is it possible to discontinue this drug and monitor my blood regularly.

Ideally anticoagulants (blood thinners) should be continued in case such a event like pulmonary emboli have been seen.If proper care is taken and regular monitoring is done ,the coumadin is quite safe. Why would you like to risk a second episode of pulmonary embolism which can be life threatening when you have drugs which can prevent it ?My advice would be to continue with the coumadin and monitor regularly.
