Have Thickness Tears Of The Supraspinatus And Infraspinatus With Retraction Of The Surpaspinatus Tendon. Surgery Needed?
I have complete, full thickness tears of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus with at least 2.7 cm of retraction of the surpaspinatus tendon with the residual infraspinatus at the level of the glenoid cavity. There is marked fatty atrophy and loss of muscle bulk. The subscapularis and teres minor remain intact. This happened almost 2 years ago. Would surgery be recommended and if so what can I expect?
hi,,welcome to HCM rotator cuff is maintaine by bones, joint, ligaments, tendons and 4 main muscles(supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor.. injuries can be partial or complete.. treatment can be conservative(non operative ) initially and surgical if acute and severe problem or when nonoperative fails... as it has been 2 yrs you may have to go for surgical repair with mesh(collagen artelon)..surgery can be arthroscopic, mini or open depending on your condition.. after suregry you have to immobilise, rehabilitate and strengthen the muscles you consult orthopaedician and discuss what is best for you all the best
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. This is to inform you that an untreated rotator cuff tear over a period of time will cause arthritic changes in the glenohumeral joint.
Surgery is mandatory if you want to have a reasonably functioning shoulder joint. Various surgical options are present depending upon whether the gap can be reconstructed or not.
If there is no chance for repair of the defect, then shoulder arthroplasty is the only choice. The type of arthroplasty will be decided by the operating surgeon after evaluating the integrity of the muscles and the condition of the humeral head and glenoid cavity.
Hope this information is helpful. Good day
