Having PCOS, Taking Metformin And Provera To Induce Periods, Weight Gain, Bloated Stomach, Tender Breasts, Pregnancy Tests Negative. Due To Imbalanced Hormones?

Hi, I am 23 years old and have been diagnosed with PCOS and am on Metformin 1000mg BID, I haven t been taking by metformin on a regular basis and also my specialist prescibes me Provera every 3 months. The last time I had a mentrual period was in April which was induced with Provera. I should have recieved my prescriction in july but it is still in the process. Right now my concern is that I have gained about 10 pounds over the past couple of weeks and my stomach is really bloated and my breast feel really tender I wanted to know if these signs/symptoms are normal for PCOS due to imbalanced hormones (I ve never felt like this before) also I had a prgnancy test(blood work) done as well and it was negative.

Hello,
Usually metformin is prescribed for PCOS, and it is more effective in Women with glucose intolerance( a condition before diabetics)
Metformin helps in weight reduction.
Provera is a progesterogen used as a contraceptive, which can also regularize menses.
It has side effects like abdominal pain, bloatedness, weight changes etc.
Provera injection is given as depo for 4 times a year,
sometimes these injections cause erratic absorption from the site of injection (usually buttocks). so these may cause delayed onset of actions or side effects.
For bloated abdomen have simethicone, and some anlgesics for breast tenderness.
Inform about this complains to your Gyn during your next visit for getting povera dose.
Bye

Hello
PCOS is a hormone imbalance found in reproductive age women. Often, women with PCOS produce too much insulin to digest sugars. That higher insulin causes the hypothalamus gland to suppress estrogen in the ovaries and raise testosterone, the male hormone that creates the bulky shape, hair growth and hair loss in male patterns, stops ovulation and can produce cysts.
"Those same hormones can cause difficulties with they way they can manufacture or metabolize sugars and starches so these women can tend to be overweight.
This is a complex endocrine disease that requires special attention from your doctors and possibly attention from a endocrinologist.  The trouble is that weight gain also causes the other symptoms and associated conditions to get worse. The other problems that you may be dealing with include irregular periods and diabetes. Both of these conditions are seen in high prevalence in patients with PCOS. Weight gain will make your periods more irregular and your diabetes more difficult to control. Conversely, weight loss can improve these problems. In addition to weight loss, the medication metformin can also be useful in making your periods more regular and your diabetes in better control (if you have these problems at all) and if you don't have diabetes then,it takes care of hyperinsulinemia.
This is a complex endocrine disease that requires special attention from your doctors and the best option would be to consult a endocrinologist,as he would be a better suited person to tackle all other associated issues that PCOS can cause.
Thanks
