Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thank you for your query.
To start of with,
bactrim is indeed a good choice of medication to be used to treat individuals suffering from a
urinary tract infection (UTI), but this varies from one individual to another because of the sensitivity or resistance each individual has to a certain antibiotic.
Although your symptoms have reduced, they should have completely subsided if you are on a course of antibiotics for a duration of 5 days, which is long enough to complete a course of antibiotics, so no, this is still not normal. You will require proper investigation and a suitable antibiotic which will help in relieving your symptoms within 2 or 3 days, and completely rid you of the infection within 5 days, maximum.
In my opinion, it is best not to self prescribe, there is a reason why doctors are advised, and the treatment should always be left to a doctor. You will require a urine analysis and a urine culture examination which will provide us information on the infection causing organism, the presence of an infection and details on the most suitable antibiotic which can be used to treat your infection.
In the meantime, please consume as much water as possible and also add cranberry juice (if available) to your regimen which has shown to have added benefits in relieving symptoms of antibiotics.
I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.
Best wishes.
