Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was playing football (soccer) last friday 13th May, I was body tackled where an opponent ploughed straight into me and knock me off my feet, it felt as though he had severely hit me in the ribs with his elbox.. I was left gasping for air on the floor. A week later things seem to be better in terms of I lift things and move normally and only get a minor twinge if I am doing my day to say stuff. The problem is when I go to bed and lie down.. my ribs feel like they are caving in and I find it very difficult to breath for a few minutes then the pain subsides but is still uncomfortable to readjust my position on my side etc.. At first I just thought it could be the muscle tissue relaxing that is causing this pain, but I got very little sleep last night due to this pain and am starting to think is could be my ribs.. but when I put my hand on the area it just feels like muscles are relaxing and goes very tight.... any ideas?

General & Family Physician, Dr. P. Mahesh's Response
Hi Gareth,
Welcome to HCM.
Blunt trauma to the chest can cause rib fracture, blood collection in the chest cavity. Since you are experiencing severe pain it is advisable that you consult a surgeon who will examine you and if indicated get a chest x-ray and treat you accordingly.
