Head Injury, Unconscious, Memory Loss, Bump On Head, Abrasion On Arm. Opinion?
My alcoholic husband quit drinking 3 weeks ago but over 4th of July drank 5 beers; went to bed, fell; hit head; unconscious when found, paramedics checked blood sugar/pressure. No memory following morning of fall. Bump on head, abrasion on arm. Refused to follow up with dr. following day. Opinion please? Carole Westfall
Your husband definitely needs clinical examination and non contrast CT scan of brain to rule out any injury to brain. Alcoholics are more prone to develop subdural hemorrhage. Other type of hemorrhage like parenchymal contusion, extradural hemorrhage or bony injury may occur . These conditions need to be ruled out.
With a history of head injury followed by loss of consciousness and memory, there is always a possibility of brain injury. Intake of alcohol can make symptoms confusing in such patients and they should be examined in ER by a team of doctors.
A little bleed inside the head can never be ruled out in such patients, even if they have become normal later on. A CT scan of the brain can be considered important in revealing any life threatening condition inside the head.
Hope this helps.
