Heart Doctor Diagnosed Childhood Disease Involving Heart Valve Closing In Old Age. Any Ideas About What Disease It Could Be?

My mother went to the heart doctor and the physician assistant told my mother that she probably had a childhood disease when she was a baby or young child that probably was one of the factors involving her valves closing. We can call tomorrow but it is driving us crazy trying to remember. My mom thought she had whooping cough but she said something else. Do you know what it could be?

Hi,
Your mother possibly had rheumatic fever as a child. This is a complication from a strep sore throat. It causes generalised joint pain and swelling but can also lead to rheumatic heart disease. Rheumatic heart disease develops when inflammation causes the valves in the heart to become damaged and stiffened, meaning that the normal flow of blood through the heart is disrupted. This can cause problems with heart valves later in life.
I hope this helps you.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger,
