Heavy Periods, Blood After Urinating, Bleeding After Sex. Family History Of Ovarian Cancer. Worried
Hello I am 31 years old I have heavy periods. for the past few months everytime I wipe after urinating there is blood. It isn't coming out on my underwear just when I wipe. there has also been extremely large amounts of blood after sex. Gyno said I was fine and too young to be worried but I really am. Have two aunts and a gramother who died of ovarian cancer what should I do
Dear Meeshell1001,
This abnormal bleeding should be treated after diagnosing it's cause, which can be done by speculum examination viewing your vagina and cvix and at the same time obtaining a high vaginal swab and a PAP smear, +/- colposcopy if necessary.
This bleeding issue is not related to ovarian cancer. But, Since you have a family history of ovarian cancer, I will give you the recommendations for management of women with high risk of ovarian cancer:
1- counseling with a geneticist and genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
2- screening by transvaginal ultrasound every 6-12 months.
3- taking combined oral contraceptive pills as long as you don't wish to get pregnant.
4- if the risk is well documented, you can surgically remove your ovaries once you have completed your family.
5- annual mammography is also recommended after age 30.
At the end I wish you the best of luck and good health.
Dr. Ahmed Bahaa.
