History Of Chest Infections. Taken Antibiotics For Lung Blockage. Increased Heart Beat Now, Difficulty Breathing

Hi

I'm away in the UK at the moment from Australia. I have a history of getting chest infections, before I went away I had a cold and it moved to my chest although not bronchitis but just a dry cough that caused much pain to my ribs/chest area. The doctor diagnosed me as having costochondritis, before this i got a chest xray just to make sure it wasnt anything else, the Dr concluded my left lung had a bit of blockage but obviously wasnt too worried so Put me on Amoxycillin to get rid of the cough coz I was going away so soon...I'd usually try and fight it myself.

So I've been in the UK for 3 days now, finished my antibiotics 2 days ago and yesterday something weird happened. I had a coffee at a cafe and all of a sudden my heart starting going crazy. I know I may be caffeine sensitive coz this has happened before, but it made me go into a frenzy. Prior to having the coffee I did have a bit of a cough that I had woken up with. apparently the pollen is high in the UK and the people i am staying with think its that. Im not convinced though as It's like a throat tickle, non productive but made quite a loud rattle when I did cough. Makes me feel like I couldn't breathe properly and is quite distressing as I feel like my lungs are just going to close up.

Then after I ate my lunch I started getting really really bad indigestion, so chronic it was burning my chest and when Id burp it's bring a bit of relief but not much.

In the car on the way home my chest started tightening and feeling sore (something I am used to I get chest pain quite a bit) as well as my heart beating out of control. I couldnt stop the tickle cough either, I was coughing quite frequently. I felt so unwell I almost considered going to the ER. This scares me as I am a pretty healthy 21 year old female who doesn't drink much, non smoker, and exercises regularly when I'm not sick.

I calmed down a little, but then last night at dinner I started feeling extremely nauseous and shaky. I couldnt focus on anything and was really out of it. still felt really out of breath. I ordered dinner but could barely manage two mouthfuls. Again wanted to go to the ER.

When I Came home I had really loose stools and went to bed feeling quite unwell, woke up quite a few times in the night. I have woken up this morning with a sore stomach, that's another thing I wake up feeling quite unwell every morning like my stomach is line of burning, as well as short of breath again.

I am at the end... I am young and want to think I'm healthy but just don't know what's wrong. I really am trying to enjoy myself but can't and just want to go home. Sorry it is so long I just wanted to give you a full list.

I have another 4 weeks abroad and am worried something bad is going to happen to me! Please please help me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,

The possibilities I would like to consider in your case are Allergy, Acidity/ indigestion/peptic ulcer, Anxiety.

Allergy to pollen could cause a dry cough and chest discomfort.

Anxiety could cause difficulty in breathing and chest tightness and a racing heart beat.

Acidity/ stomach ulcers could cause a burning sensation in the chest /stomach.

I would advise you to consult a physician to rule out a cardiac problem.

In the meantime medications like cetirizine for allergy, and proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole for acidity might help.

Avoid spicy/oily/fatty food. Have food with cooling properties like cucumber and apple.

If you are eating out most of the time stick to healthy food options.

Hope the above information was helpful to you.

Get well soon.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
