History Of Head Injuries, Had Bad Concussion, Lost Consciousness. Hit In Jaw, Getting Tremors. Muscle Spasms?

My son has a history of head injuries. He is 20 years old and a year and a half ago he was assaulted and had a bad concussion, with a loss of consciousness, 4th concussion and 3rd loss of consciousness. Yesterday, he was hit in the jaw and since, he is getting tremors in his jaw. He is away at college 4 hours from home. I am urging him to go to an emergency room, he is saying it is muscle spasms, but teeth chattering does not sound like muscle spasms. What do you think?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.

First of all, I would like to reassure you that your son's symptoms do not suggest any serious illness.

The tremors of the jaw are likely to be due to spasms, or anxiety or a combination of both.

In rare cases, dystonia of jaw muscles (a neurological condition) can cause jaw tremors.

In any case, there is no need to rush to the ER now. They should settle down in a day or two. If not, then, your son can consult a doctor.

I hope it helps. Please get back if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Neurology)
