Hospitalized For Bowel Obstruction, Kidney Infection. Brown Liquid Sucked From Stomach. Is It Dangerous?

my mom is in the hospital, they said she has a bowel obstruction and her kidneys are infected. She is a quad from a cr accident over 30 years ago. I have not been able to talk to a DR yet and was wondering how dangerous a bowel obstruction is and what does it mean when there is brown liquid being sucked from her stomach from a tube.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
An obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract leads to accumulation of gastric contents, mucus secretions, digestive juices proximal to the site of obstruction.
These accumulated contents need to be sucked with the help of naso-gastric tube.
If not removed these contents can dilate the proximal segment.
Increase in pressure can rupture the intestine.
So, this is necessary step to decompress the intestine.
Obstruction can be managed after decompression.

Thanks and take care
