Hospitalized For Coughing Up Blood, X-ray Shows Shadow On Lungs. Still Coughing Blood. Diagnosis ?

My brother was coughing up blood and went into hospital a week ago. An x-ray was done and a shadow was found on his lung . Medication was given to stop the bleeding and he was discharged today with tablets within hours he was coughing up blood again and has just been seen by triage and waiting to be seen now. Family history of D.V.T. s, cancer , high blood pressure, angina, diabetes . What should we expect the hospital to be doing to establish a diagnosis

Hi,
Advanced investigations like CT scan thorax and bronchoscopy if available may be required in this case to guide the further line of management. Also the blood stopping medications may have been prescribed to you. A 2d echo may also help locate signs of pulmonary embolism if any. If the coughing of blood is not controlled on medications then bronchial artery embolisation if available can be carried out on the patient.
