Hi. Im very sick right now with the flu and a very bad cough. I just woke up from a coughing fit and also had something in my mouth which i thought was mucus when i went to spit it out it was an unknown thing with some blackness to it and i started to pull it apart. Upon doing so it was made up of clear fibers.

Hi,

Based on your description, it may be old or dried blood mixed with mucus. Old/dried blood usually has a dark appearance.

The use of a mucolytic can help break up the mucus so that it can be easily expelled. EG mucomyst, guaifenesin.

Using a lot of fluids would also help to decrease thickness. If a cough is very severe, you may need a short course of steroids to decrease the inflammation in the chest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
