How Can severe Sternum Pain Be Treated?
MY husband started having pain in the sternum area this morning and now it has moved to the heart area and intensified. He has taken the Nitrostat 1 pill first 10 mins apart then 7 mins and then 5 mins. He still has pain but not as bad. He has a pacemaker/defribulator and we have sent a report to latitude. It would be best for him to be seen as soon as possible if there is a history of heart disease as indicated by the medication that was mentioned- nitrostat.
He may also need to take aspirin as well, this is the initial treatment in persons who are have a acute block in a blood vessel in the heart.
If there is tenderness on pressing on the sternum, it is possible that the pain is not related to the heart and may be due to inflammation where the ribs attach to the sternum but heart disease would still need to be ruled out.
