Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I started having tightness in my chest about 25 minutes after eating a meal out at a restaurant. It seemed to bother my chest down toi my abdomen. I have a large hiatal hernia. It has been hard to talk. It is somewhat better now that I m home but am still concerned.
Hiatus hernias are usually managed without surgery. It is only when they get cumbersome or create a lot of discomfort that surgery needs to be contemplated. The large hiatus hernia is the most likely explanation. The way forward will be to avoid large and rich meals. Another point will be to avoid lying down immediately after eating. A question you may ask, can it be something else? It may be and there is no way to tell. If you still have chest discomfort, please step into your closest ER and have yourself examined. This is especially helpful if you have a personal history of smoking, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. It is also important to do so if any of your immediate relatives had heart disease under the age of 60. While the chances of having a hiatus hernia behind all of these problems is high, it will be good to make sure that there is nothing related to the heart in play.
