Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can ADHD Along With Anxiety And Depression Be Treated?
I have recently been diagnosed as adhd. I am an older adult (62) and my physicians want to prescribe anti anxiety or antidepressants. I aM very frustrated because everything I have read states that stimulants are effective in 70% of patients. I feel like I have been misdiagnosed most of my life. I have been on many antidepressants in the past and on an anti anxiety. They do nothing to abate the adhd symptoms and have horrible side effects. I don t understand why doctors are so reluctant to prescribe what has historically worked the best and is safe enough for 6 year olds but I don t have that same opportunity to determine if it would help me. I am very frustrated, feeling like I deserve to live the best quality of life I can for whatever time I have left. What can I do to get the help I need and deserve?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
ADHD can be diagnosed if a person shows symptoms of ADHD for more than 6 months. I can understand your fear of side effects. But it may be dangerous to avoid taking medications if your focus breaks & you lose tracks, you are forgetful, impatient or impulsive. You can examine yourself, get satisfied. Get Re-diagnosed after a couple of days. If you feel you are having problems with your symptoms you can take medications and also try to have control over yourself. Do not panic, have patience, get treated, get well. In the meantime, take probiotics, take plenty of sleep, stay away from stress & anxiety, eat healthy, exercise, stay happy & socialize. Stay away from addictions if any.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
