How Can ADHD In A Child Be Treated?

My seven year old daughter struggles with writing, focusing and is just now really getting into reading. Her vocabulary that she uses is far above what most adults use. Her math skills are way high too. The teacher is suggesting holding her back in school. Before we consent to this I am thinking perhaps she needs to get on some medication to help her focus.
