How Can Asperger S Syndrome Be Treated?

My grandson was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome around the age of 5. He is 18 and struggling. We are at a loss as to direction to go. He won t take medicines, dropped out of high school 6 weeks before graduation, was a brilliant percussionist, frequently has talked about suicide, has gotten 3 speeding tickets in last few months and can no longer drive to work on his own due to loss of insurance. We need advice. He has been to psychologist, been kept on 72 hour hold at facility in Kansas city, etc. Please help.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I reviewed your query and here is advise.
There aren't any drugs approved by the FDA that specifically treat Asperger's or autism spectrum disorders. Some medications, though, can help with related symptoms like depression and anxiety. Your doctor may prescribe some of these: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Treatment of AS/HFA can help your child navigate through social challenges, capitalize on his or her strengths, and be successful.
Although research and experience have revealed many of the mysteries surrounding Asperger Syndrome/HFA, it remains a complex disorder that impacts each child differently. However, many children with AS/HFA have made remarkable breakthroughs with the right combinations of therapies and interventions.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
