Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has Molluscum contagiosum and his pediatrician has recomended me to apply a wart remover of name Compound W. This wart remover contains Salicyilic acid 17%, I know aspirin is asociated with Reye s sÃndrome in children. I want to know if it is safe for my child to use this medication? Thanks a lot!
Incomplete data like age of your son, any associated illness?
Reye's syndrome most commonly affects children and teenagers recovering from a viral infection such as influenza or chickenpox. It seems to be triggered by Aspirin which is used to treat high fever during such infections.
And the fact that since Compound W (Salicylic acid 17%) is applied on the affected areas of the skin, the amount that gets absorbed into the systemic circulation is not sufficient enough to trigger such harmful effects.
So, it can be safely used if your son is not suffering from the viral infection as listed above.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
