How Can PLMD In A Child Be Treated?

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with PLMD after a sleep study in 11/15. Prescription iron only brought ferritin from 20 to 40 after 6 months of continual iron. Other symptoms include muscle spasms during waking hours and a lesion found on thalamus. I am now thinking that we need to figure out WHY his ferritin is so low and WHY he didn t absorb the Rd iron. I think all of his symptoms are related to that. He continues to struggle with sleep and still has the involuntary movements. He fatigues easily. He is struggling more with concentration even though a straight A student.

Hello,

Besides having periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), your child may also have excessive daytime sleepiness or insomnia. If your child doesn't have the above problems, she probably won't need treatment for the PLMD at all. If it's severe, though, PLMD can interfere with your child's development or affect his grades and family or social life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
