How Can UTI And Kidney Stones Be Prevented?

I had a kidney stone (4.0mm in size) as well as UTI causing lower abdominal pain, frequent urination and bloody urine with burning sensation in last year, 2016 and the stone was flushed with urine through more water intake during under the treatment in local hospital. My doctor prescribed to take antibiotics intravenously, some syrup (Potrate SF) and tablets to fight UTI and Stone symptoms. After fifteen days, I was completely out of problem and remain same up to 11/05/2017. But, on 11th May 2017 I have felt same strong urge to frequent urinate with almost no urine and the back pain throughout the night. In the next morning I have consulted with my local doctor and he prescribed some oral antibiotic tablets for five days along with Potrate SF and other medicine. Now, all the pain and frequent urination has gone and I feel quite well. However, I am afraid of reinfection again in the future. Is there any really good option to reduce the chances of UTI and kidney stone in the future. Kindly Suggest. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Brief answer: Good hydration, avoid certain food types are mainstay of prevention.

Explanation: My opinion is that kidney stones are a matter of concern as they make patients liable to urinary tract infections. Certain conditions predispose to stone formation. Too much food intake like tomatoes, mangoes, beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, and most nuts predispose to stone formation. Prolonged dehydration times also lead to more concentrated urine and that would develop stones. Some bacterial infections encourage stones to form.

I suggest my patients the following good hydration, take less amount of above mentioned food and follow-up regularly if any burning or change in color of urine developed.

Conclusion: I suggest you complete your antibiotic courses. Take plenty amount of fluids and follow-up with your physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
