How Can UTI Be Treated?

I took Cipro for a few days and had a bad dizzy spell and fell over. Had some gastrointestinal problems but was taking steroid also at the same time. I had a UTI and now have another UTI and am headed for surgery Jan 8. They said the nitrofurdantin is only intermediate for my infection. What else could I take for the UTI. I am allergic to penicillin and erthromyacin.
