How Can UTI Be Treated?

I had a culture done and I have a UTI - but I am actually feeling better. My doctor prescribed Nirofurantoin Mono and I am concerned of the side affects. Do I have to take this medicine or will the UTI clear up with drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice?

Hello,

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a very common condition and should be treated with antibiotics if the diagnosis confirms or even empirically. Nitrofurantoin is not routinely prescribing, it's indicated in two situations: the first for pregnant and the second if sensitive in the culture.

The other medications commonly prescribed: Co-trimoxazole for lower UTI and Ciprofloxacin for upper UTIs. Also, you have to know that nitrofurantoin causes gastric upset most commonly, and the other serious complications like lung fibrosis occur only if you use it for the long term.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahmoud Abouibrahim
