Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend was bitten by a dog on his hand 5 years ago but didnt get a rabies vaccination. She also dont know if the dog died or if it remained alive. Last June 2017, ahe we t to an animal bite treatment center and they give him only pre exposure treatment for 3 doses. Dissatisfied, August 2017,she went to another treatment center, and they advised him to undergo the full course session of post exposure treatment which is 4 doses(0,3,7,28)2 shots each session. A month after he finished his Day 28... her wound was licked by a cat and she received again booster(2 doses) Was his treatment enough or did i receive too much anti rabies vaccine in his body? Do we need to worry?thanks so much
If it is not known that the animal is having rabies or not (Who bites), then it is better to complete the course of anti-rabies vaccine post exposure is preferable.
If the dog is not infected with rabies disease, then it is nothing to worry but in absence of this information risk cannot be taken, so it is better to complete the post exposure treatment only (Post bite).
If the pre-exposure treatment is taken and then after the post exposure dose completed, it is alright, but dose should not be exceeded.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Akhtarhusain
