Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 80 years old and in good health (5 8 -160 lbs.) I fractured my elbow in a fall 6 days ago. It is currently in a splint and my upper arm has turned purple with a reddish cast. My doctor is advising total elbow replacement and says there are fragments in there and he doesn t think he can put a plate or screws in there that will hold. I would rather not have surgery if there is any way it can heal on its own. I have very little pain with it and I am able to type. Must I have surgery for the elbow to ever function right again?
Hello It will not heal on its own. Since your age is also 80, so it is very difficult to heal on its own. It's better to go for open reduction and internal fixation if there is a fracture and bone dislocation.
