How Can A Kidney Stone Be Removed?

have a stone too large to pass normally, there has been an ultra sound telling the Dr. that much. In another 2 weeks he is doing a cystoscopy under local anaesthetic to see what type of procedure they will use to get rid of the stone. He said they could go through the side, front, or back ? he is also doing a scope of my bladder, looking for cysts or tumors. Is this a painful procedure, and what would the expected time be on the procedure? They will not be taking the stone that day just doing the scope so they will know if the stone has got larger, and how to take it out. I suffer from stress and very high anxiety, and am on meds for them. I also take oxycodone for pain , from back surgery. I passed 5a stone years ago and it almost killed me, then a few years later I had only one stone and the day before surgery on it, I passed it naturally in a hot clear water tub. I am concerned about what I am reading from other comments , with the post surgery pain and possible infections. And whether I will have a stent. there are mixed feelings on that. After I passed the 5 stones through the urinary tract, I was pain free, and went home the same day. I lost a lot of weight from losing EVERY drop of liquid, No tears, or saliva, or sweat anymore, The pain took everything from me. I have a high tolerance to pain, but just turned 65 and I m not sure what to expect. I am in fact scared to death. of all the other surgeries, and cancer even, this one scares me a lot . Thank you for taking the time to read this . I have been in the dark all this time. Gayle Fowler

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Most small stones in patients with relatively mild hydronephrosis can be treated with observation and acetaminophen.

More serious cases with intractable pain may require drainage with a stent or percutaneous nephrostomy.

Treatment of nephrolithiasis involves emergency management of renal (ureteral) colic, including surgical interventions where indicated, and medical therapy for the stone disease.

In emergency settings where concern exists about possible renal failure, the focus of treatment should be on correcting dehydration, treating urinary infections, preventing scarring, identifying patients with a solitary functional kidney.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
