How Can A Kidney Stone Be Removed?

I have a stag horn calculus in my left kidney. It s too large to pass per er dr. The urologist I saw today said I need surgery to get it out. She said radiology would insert wire through my back into my kidney, then she would use scope to suck out the stag horn. She told me I could loose kidney function if I don t get staghorn out of my kidney. Is this a safe procedure?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

Yes, your doctor is very right, large stones can make real problems for the kidneys if left fro long, as it can obstruct the path of urine flow from the kidney to the bladder, it can also cause infections and pain. Regarding the procedure, in expert hands its very safe procedure and would rarely cause any big problem. Though there can be some complication, but those are very rare and the benefit of the procedure clearly overweight its risks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
