Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can A Painful Schwannoma Behind The Left Knee Be Treated?
Good evening I was about a year and half ago diagnosed with a Schwannoma behind by left knee. I decided to wait to have it removed as it was not causing me any discomfort. It will be removed if things changed or if my MRI next year shows growth. Today I had stabbing pains in my knee cap about centered in the area. So much so I couldn t walk without excruciating pain. This is about the 4th time its happened but much worse and longer lasting. First 3 times it lasted 30 seconds this time a few minutes. I dont want to be one of those patients who call over every little pain. Would you recommend I get in touch with my oncologist and try to get a MRI sooner?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I understand your concern. The pain may be related to the Schwannoma, but it may also be related to any other condition of the knee( bursitis, arthritis, cartilage tear, meniscus injury etc.).
In both cases you may have to perform a MRI to find out the cause of the pain, so you can consult your oncologist or an orthopedist to decide about the MRI. In my opinion you can perform the MRI sooner, since it's a safe imaging technique, and it is a high sensitivity examination in knee joint medical condition diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query.
