Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I never had anything like this before. I hit the top of my butt crack and tailbone on the seatbelt clasp when getting into a service vehicle at work on a Friday and it ached all weekend. When I went back to work I reported it and then 2 days later I went to the ER. The doctor said I had a pilonidal abscess. She cut it open, drained it and then packed it. Then 2 days later the packing was removed then repacked. The doctor said she had seen this before caused by falling. Work is telling me that this isn t from hitting the seatbelt. So my question is, can my employer just blow off my injury or is the doctor wrong?
A Pilonidal Abscess or a cyst is commonly seen due to traumatic injury. However, there can be a few other causes and it can occur due to causes like a traumatic injury to the tailbone area, ingrown hairs, infection in the area etc.
A clinical examination is generally sufficient and if required X-ray can also be advised.
In your case of Pilonidal abscess as it is already drained now you can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and cool compresses over the area.
It will help in healing the area well. After this, you should avoid injury to the area and maintain a good hygiene so that it heals well and does not recur.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
