i was cleaning my ear with a cotton tip swab and slipped and jammed the swab far into my ear . I went to the emergency room and was told I ruptured my ear drum and to see an ent specialist . Right now I can barely hear out of that ear and cannot hear high pitch sounds at all . My question is , is the hearing loss I m experiencing going to be permanent or will it return after the eardrum has healed?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Rupture of eardrum known as Eardrum perforation can cause hearing loss and the recovery of hearing depends on the level of damage. So yes, you should immediately consult an ENT Physician and get evaluated. Clinical examination and an Otoscopy can be done to check the tympanic membrane or the ear drum.
If the perforation is small then it will heal gradually on its own. You need to put antibiotic ear drops to avoid infection. But in case if perforation is large then Tympanoplasty that is surgical repair of eardrum has to be done.
Also, avoid excessive exposure to water like swimming, diving and any sudden exposure to loud sound.
I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions. Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
