Greetings from Healthcare magic members,
I can understand your concern. However, mouth injuries in infants are not as worse as they seems to be. There are many small blood vessels inside the mouth which causes the blood to ooze even after minor
injury. Stay calm and follow the following instructions:
1. Always wash your hands well before checking into the child's mouth
2. Stop the bleeding by gently pressing the affected area for five to ten minutes with clean gauze. Avoid frequent stretching of the cheek and let it heal.
3. Play some music or give your child his favorite toy in order to distract his mind from feeling of pain.
4. Keep the area cool- Avoid giving him hot liquids and food item. To reduce the pain, you can apply ice pack or cloth dipped in iced water to the affected area.
5. Most of the minor injuries like nail scratches heal quickly without any medications. However, you can give a dose of
ibuprofen or
acetaminophen syrup to ease the pain. The dose of the syrup should be according to his age and weight
6. Care in feeding is important- Try to avoid hot milk. Clean the mouth with soft damp gauze after feeding which helps in preventing infection in the affected area
7. Do not rush and give few days to heal the cut
Hope this answers your question. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
Dr. Khoja
