General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
What you are complaining of is lost or stuck tampon. Dont worry as it happens sometimes. Don’t be embarrassed. It can be removed, but you need to act fast, as leaving tampoon for more than 8 hours carries a risk of developing 'Toxic Shock Syndrome'.
Remember, a tampon cannot go any further than the vagina, as the cervical opening is too small for the tampon to go past. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about the tampon becoming “lost” inside your body.
Before you remove the stuck tampon, make sure your nails are short, as sharp or long nails can tear the delicate genital tissues.
Kindly do the following:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
2. Get into a comfortable position like sit or squat down.
3. Create tension in your pelvic area to increase the pressure on the vagina and pushes down on any tampons within.
4. Gently insert your finger into your vagina. Feel cervix at the end of your vagina and it feels just like the end of your nose
5. A lost tampon will often be found in a small pouch behind the cervix. Sweep around the cervix with your finger to find the tampon.
6. If you don’t find anything the first time, you need to try again, searching more deeply.
7. Once you’ve located the tampon, hook it out with the finger, or use a second finger to pinch it and slowly pull it out.
8. If you’re having difficulty, try bathing in clean, warm water. Do not use soap. A dried out tampon will expand in the water, making it easier to retrieve.
If it has started to disintegrate and you aren’t sure if you got all the pieces out or if you can’t find the tampon or retrieve it by these measures, you need to seek medical attention right away. If a tampon is left inside of you, it could cause an infection and be very dangerous.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
