How Can A Tear In The Dura Mater Be Treated?

FATHER HAD LOWER LUMBAR SURGERY. HE HAS A TEAR IN THE DURA. DR CONTINUES TO SUTURE HIM AND CLAIMED IF HE COULD GET IT FROM DRAINING TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD IT WOULD CREATE INTERNAL PRESSURE AND ALLOW THE TEAR TO HEAL. MY FATHER HAS BEEN SUTURED 4 TIMES NOW. THERE IS STILL A SMALL AREA WHERE HE IS LEAKING SPINAL FLUIDS. THE DR WANTS TO APPLY A FEW MORE SUTURES. WHY IS SURGERY BEING AVOIDED? WHAT IS THE LIKELY HOOD THAT THE DURA WILL HEAL? AND IF IT DOESN T HEAL? HOW LONG MUST WE WAIT TO SEE THE RESULTS?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As far as my clinical experience is concerned, the discharge of spinal fluid at this time does not sound to be normal at all.
* The recovery time depends on various factors as type of tear, host immune system and others.
* One thing is sure that further suturing is strongly to be avoided and wait for the spontaneous closure.
* Still if you provide me MRI reports, I can focus further regarding the same.
Do give me further chance to assist in future.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
