How Can A Toe Infection Be Treated?

My mother has an infection on her big toe right next to the nail. It has a lot of Puss build up and the toe is blackened and red. She went to the emergency room and they prescribed her Doxycycline. Her primary Doctor told her that this medication is used really for gum disease or infections in the mouth. Is this correct what her primary Doctor told her.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of a condition called paronychia. It is nothing but a pus collection around the nail bed.

Consult a general surgeon and get it drained. Nothing much to worry and it can be done under local anesthesia. A short course of antibiotics also required preferably Ampiclox.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
